At the beginning of this new chapter, Herr Brugli is staying at a hotel where he is treated like a celebrity. When he arrives at the hotel, the manager walks up to him saying, "We've reserved your usual room, the one you had last year. The one which looks out over the trees. I believe you liked it" (pg. 19). Knowing that the manager remembered which room Herr preferred most. It made him feel like he was known, at least by them, and it gave him a sense of security.
After he unpacked, he left the hotel to walk about the city. He came upon a bar, and went in to have a drink. While he was inside he met a man, who introduced him to young teenage girl. Herr payed off the man for the girl, and took her out to dinner, and then back to his hotel. Back at the hotel he told her to strip so he could have sex with her, but after she did, he foundout that she wasn't a girl, but actually a boy.
